Agricultural project: Lehrgarten (Hospital Agriculture Education Center (HAEC) Mutolere)

In 2013 our project of an agricultural training and teaching garden (HAEC) on the grounds of the St. Francis Hospital started. Since then, during the school holidays, our sponsored children and increasingly also pupils from the surrounding schools have been introduced to the planting of beds, cultivation, harvesting and processing of fruit and vegetables. Also the keeping of farm animals is taught and very important, the basic rules of hygiene. The two instructors Keneth and Augustin lead the children with great sympathy and joy in the cooperation. The relatives of the patients from the hospital come by and look with interest at − the outside effect of the teaching garden is great. Headmasters visit their students' holiday courses to get an impression of the area. As a result, several schools have set up their own school gardens. At the end of the holiday courses, all participants receive plant seedlings to plant their own beds at home. Since 2018, MfU has also taken over the teaching courses for adults, which until then had been financed by another organisation.

What do I need to cook a soup?
Instructor Keneth demonstrates the operation of the hand wash (tip toe): with the foot, a branch is pressed down, which makes the pot to tilt and thus the water to flow
Very important: In the summer courses, students receive a hot meal a day
Demonstration: How do I prepare a dough? At the back left is the kitchen building, in front of it different vegetables are cut and potatoes are peeled
The right cut technique of watermelon and pineapple
Practical instructions for rabbit keeping: The rabbit hutch is cleaned

Children, teenagers and adults should acquire gardening skills in order to grow vegetables and fruit independently at home and to raise small animals such as chickens and rabbits. A further project objective is the external impact of the teaching garden, which consists of arousing interest and publicising new cultivation possibilities in the villages.
